Come to Albuquerque for the International Balloon Fiesta which is held the first full week in October and runs for 9 days!  There are more than 700 balloons in the sky at one time!  It is considered to be one of the most photographed event in the world drawing both domestic and international balloonists and spectators.  Mass ascensions, when more than 700 balloons lift off, are held on all four weekend mornings and one day mid-week.

With the clear blue skies, calm winds and mild temperatures of Albuquerque it is the perfect venue for the beauty of ballooning.  Not only is it fabulous in October when the International Balloon Fiesta is held but it is a great time year-round.  There are more than 300 resident balloonists (more than any other state) who fly their balloons frequently and for long periods of time making for a stunning sight in the sky.

night ballooning.jpgBe sure to stay around for the evening too, there you will be able to enjoy Balloon "Glowdeos".  This is where the propane burners inflate the balloons against a dark sky, they seem to flicker like giant psychedelic light bulbs.  You will see special shapes of different balloons come alive during this event.  Just look at the dinosaurs, bumble bees, flowers, stage coach and cow jumping over the moon can all bee seen at this event.  These special shapes all launch together during their own mass ascensions, called "special shape rodeos."

There are hot air balloon companies throughout Albuquerque that you can locate to take a flight of your own.  They fly on a daily basis (unless there is a weather related reason to not fly that day, but that isn't very often.)

While you are there be sure to visit the Albuquerque International Balloon Museum.  Here you will learn about the art, culture, science, history, sport and spectacle of hot air ballooning. The museum opened in 2005 for the educating and enjoyment of those that visit.

It is located on the southern edge of Balloon Fiesta Park.  The balloon museum is named after two Albuquerque pilots who were pioneers in long-distance helium balloon flight. Ben Abruzzo and Maxie Anderson were part of the crews who first successfully crossed the Atlantic Ocean in a balloon in 1978 and the Pacific Ocean in 1981.

Advance admission tickets for Balloon Fiesta are available now by calling (888) 422-7277 ext. 303.

Each year the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta teams up with sponsors to help Balloon Fiesta goers avoid congested traffic and parking conditions near Balloon Fiesta Park by offering incentives to park their vehicles at one of several Albuquerque locations and take a Balloon Fiesta Express Park & Ride bus into Balloon Fiesta Park. Balloon Fiesta admission is also included! With the limited number of parking spaces at Balloon Fiesta Park it makes even more sense to park & ride!!  Ask about the locations when you call about your tickets.

What is the cost, and how do I get into the park?

Admission to the 2009 Balloon Fiesta will be $6 for persons over the age of 12. Children 12 years old and under are admitted free. General Parking is $10 per car.

Advance admission tickets are available in packs of five (5) as a Five-Event Ticket for $25 (+ $2 S&H), a $5 discount. Call (888) 422-7277 extension 303 for ticket information.

Some of the events have crowds in excess of 100,000 people so arrive early.  For weekend events, plan to arrive at the park by 5:30 AM.  During evening events try to be there by 4 pm.  Gates open at 4:30 AM and 3 PM.

Besides the balloons, there is a stage located in the center of Main Street that schedules various bands and children's acts. they also have roving entertainment and interactive education at the Balloon Discovery Center.

What is the difference between the Balloon Glow and the Night Magic Glow™?

They are both static displays of the balloons after sunset. The Balloon Glow is the original, occurs on the first Sunday night, and usually has a few more balloons. The Night Magic Glow occurs on the second Saturday night. For evening events, bring a flashlight.  Also, take note of where you have parked your car.  It may be more difficult to find it in the dark.

What is the Gondola Club?

The Gondola Club is offered to Balloon Fiesta guests that would like to receive some extra special treatment while they are visiting the Balloon Fiesta. Members will receive entrance tickets, special parking tickets, a Gondola Club souvenir, a collectible pin, and hospitality tent privileges Balloon Fiesta Park.
Location: The field is located in North Albuquerque, west of I-25, approximately 12 miles north of the Albuquerque Sunport (Airport), 7 miles north of downtown Albuquerque, and 5 miles east of Rio Rancho.
