El Malpais National Monument-Grants, New Mexico

Volcanology of lava flows dating from 115,000 to 2,000 years old.  Photograpy, sightseeing and wildlife viewing abound.

El Malpais means "the badlands" but contrary to its name this unique area holds many surprises, many of which researchers are now unraveling.

The monument is open to visitors except for the Sandstone Bluffs Overlook that closes at dusk. 

El Malpais information Center is open daily 8:30am to 4:30pm, cosed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day.

The Northwest New Mexico Visitor Center is open daily from 8am to 5pm and 9am to 6pm during Daylight Savings Time, closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
