Explore the Artistic Legacy of Georgia O’Keeffe in Santa Fe

The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe, NM is a must see attraction for anyone interested in viewing O’Keeffe’s artwork and learning about her life and legacy. The Museum opened in 1997 with just 94 O’Keeffe works. In just over a decade, its collection has expanded to include almost 1000 works by O’Keeffe, including paintings, sketches and drawings, photographs and sculptures.

In addition to artwork created by Georgia O’Keeffe, the Museum also holds hundreds of photographs taken of O’Keeffe throughout her life that include many of her friends, homes, subjects and animals. A large amount of personal property owned by O’Keeffe is exhibited at the Museum, as well. You can also view art by other artists who worked during the same period and were active in the American art scene during the time of her career.

There are current exhibitions as well as permanent exhibitions for visitors to explore at the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum. The works included in the permanent collection at the Museum include examples of her abstract works as well as her representational paintings.

You will see many examples of her work with natural and still life forms as their subject at the Museum, including many of her beautiful and well known flower paintings. Trees are another prominent subject in the body of O’Keeffe’s work, and visitors can see a variety of her tree paintings on exhibit, as well.

Although many people associate Georgia O’Keeffe with natural subjects such as flowers and trees, architecture was another subject that features prominently in her artwork. There is a variety of examples of different types of architecture that are featured in Georgia O’Keeffe paintings on exhibit at the Museum. You can also see examples of O’Keeffe’s landscapes, including many of her landscape paintings of New Mexico.

Presently there is an intriguing exhibition at the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum entitled “Georgia O’Keeffe and Ansel Adams: Natural Affinities.” This exhibition features the works of both Georgia O’Keeffe and those of her contemporary, Ansel Adams. Almost 100 of the artists’ works are displayed together in an incredible exhibition that showcases their vision and unique abilities to capture the essence of the natural world.    

On your visit to the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, you can take advantage of exhibition guides, audio tours or docent led tours to learn about and engage with the artwork you will see.

Visitors have a unique opportunity to see many of Georgia O’Keeffe’s personal belongings at the Museum’s Research Center. Here you can see items collected from her studios and homes, including subjects used in her work such as rocks, shells and bones. Clothing and art materials are just some of the many personal items available for viewing at the Research Center at the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum.
