New Mexico Camping
Although I'm not by any means a veteran of New Mexico camping, the few trips that I have had have been very enjoyable. One of the great things about New Mexico is how sparsely populated it is. Although this can be a bit of a hassle for people who live there, it makes camping in New Mexico a lot of fun. You can go New Mexico camping practically anywhere. Although there are certain designated campgrounds in national parks, in reality you can basically pull off the road, set up a tent, and go to it.
Before you go, keep in mind that because of the isolation and desolation of New Mexico, you need to be a prepared camper. Having the right camping equipment is paramount to any serious New Mexico camping trip. You need to bring plenty of water most importantly, but there are many other purchases that you should make as well. It can get surprisingly cold at night, so a heavy-duty sleeping bag and mountain tent can be quite helpful. Basically, you need to be able to dress both for hot weather and cold weather. This can make packing for your camping trip a little bit difficult, but planning ahead will make it a much more enjoyable experience.
Not all New Mexico camping is out in the back woods. As a matter of fact, if you have never been camping in New Mexico before, I recommend that you stay somewhere closer to civilization. It is easy to find a campground in New Mexico that is not too far away from things. Outside of Santa Fe NM, There are plenty of easy-to-reach places where you can pull off and spend the night. Because the state is so sparsely populated, you don't really need to get very far away from it all. Just driving out of town is enough to cut the noise pollution and light pollution down considerably. You can be just off the highway, and still feel like you're in the middle of the wilderness!
Of course, camping in New Mexico is not for everyone. If you want to go New Mexico camping, you really need to like that barren, rocky, Martian look that the whole state has. To me and a lot of other people, it is beautiful, but not everyone really gets into it. The best way to find out, of course, is to go and check it out. Enjoy your camping trip!
