New Mexico Natural Wonders

New Mexico is filled with natural wonders.  Explore undeveloped caves, walk through lava flows and see the most incredible rock formations.

Bisti Badlands- strange and fragile sandstone formations which make it seem like you are on a planet other than Earth.

Carlsbad Caverns National Park- contains gigantic subterranean chambers and formations and are home to 300,000 Mexican free-tail bats, who reside in the Caverns from the spring until October.

Capulin Volcano National Monument-The core of a volcano thata was active almost 10,000 years ago.

City of Rocks State Park- Rock formations at the park are so unique that they are only known to exist in six other places in the world.

El Malpais National Monument- Volcanic area formed as recently as 1,000 years ago.  It features spatter cones, a 17 mile long lava tube system and ice caves.

Tent Rocks National Monument- cone shaped tent rock formations that are the products of explosive volcanic eruptions.

Valles Caldera National Preserve- a 15 mile wide center of a million year old collapsed Volcano

White Sands National Monument- Part of the world’s largest gypsum dunefiled where glistening dunes rise 60 feet high and cover 275 square miles

Soda Dam- located on the Jemez River, the Soda Dam is a 300 foot long natural dam formed from mineral deposits of calcium carbonate.

Tooth of Time- The highest point along the Tooth Ridge, which rises over 1,700 fet above the base.

Valley of Fire- 125 square miles of black, twisted lava which is part of a 45 mile recent flow (between 1000 and 1500 years ago), which is the youngest lava flow in the continental United States.
