Santa Fe Opera-Santa Fe, NM

Regardless of your fondness for opera, the setting of this theater is incredible.

Productions have been held on the site since the 1950s, but James Stewart Polshek’s 1997 semi-open air structure is especially striking.  Its two intersecting roofs not only allow for views of the surrounding Jemex mountains but carry the sound to the audience beautifully.

Opening night always means a big party-an opera tailgate event, actually, complete with tuxedos and ball gowns-and the singers and musicians are international up-and-comers, usually brought in specially for each work.

The Opera starts at sundown, but the show begins early, when hundreds of patrons start to arrive at the theater.  Some bring tailgate dinners plain and fancy, some join the preview bufrfet on the rehearsal grounds, some attend the free prelude talks, and some just drink in the spectacular scenery and sunsets.

Enjoy dinner, including wine and dessert, on the beautifully landscaped grounds.  A guest speaker offers an informative talk about the evening’s opera during the dessert course.  This very popular offering is available before each performance.
